U GAZETTE DES BEAUX-ARTS. et même assez agréable. Nous ne demanderons pas à M. Gérôme pour-quoi il a choisi dans les mœurs orientales un sujet qui manque de gaietéà ce point. Il peut y avoir une utilité morale à représenter de telleschoses, rien nétant plus propre à civiliser les hommes que limage deleur barbarie. Ce qui est certain, cest que personne naurait accusé avecplus de vérité et de finesse les caractères si curieux de ces têtes, vivantesou mortes, la féroce bonhomie du fumeur, lexpression sanguinaire deexécuteur fataliste, et les affreuses grimaces que les masques des beysdécapités ont conservées après la mort, les uns contractés par lafrayeur, les autres souriant de rage, celui-ci empreint de bestialité,celui-là embelli par une noble résignation et imposant encore par sonfier courage. Tout cela se passe sous un demi-jour officieux, pendantque le soleil torride de lEgypte, tombant dans un péristyle quon aperçoitpar la porte entrouverte de la mosq
