Elles produisent ainsi un effetdensemble dune incontestable grandeur, mais on ne peut nier quellesne soient complètement sacrifiées à cet effet densemble. Les vastes pro-portions de la nef du palais de lIndustrie, les flots de lumière blancheque verse sa voûte vitrée, nécrasent pas moins la sculpture que lestableaux. Sans doute il y a des statues faites pour demeurer en plein airet en pleine lumière. Le monument colossal de don Pedro, destiné àorner une place publique de Rio-Janeiro, ne souffre nullement de lim-mense espace au milieu duquel il sélève : et toutefois la lumière vitreusequi léclairé lui sied bien moins quun franc soleil. Le moulage de lobé-lisque de Louqsor fait aussi fort bonne figure. Mais déjà la fontaine deM. Étex perd de son aspect monumental, et le gracieux édicule élevé
