Summary

[edit]
Author
Willem Van de Velde, the Younger
Description
English: Portrait of the 'Alexander'

‘Alexander’ (about 72-guns) was one of the six ships built for the French in Holland in 1666. Their names in the French Navy were ‘Conquérant’, ‘Courtisan’, ‘Intrépide’, ‘Invincible’, ‘Neptune’ and ‘Normand’. The name ‘Alexander’ may have been given to one of them before the ship was handed over. The drawing of the hull has been made on a sheet of paper 168 x 324 mm, laid down by van de Velde on a larger sheet on which he has added in pen and ink the three tops. There is an inscription in the lower left ‘d aallicsander A' and a signature and date ‘W V Velde d Jonge 1667’.
