Summary

Description

Brian Smith and William May commenced operation in Benfleet with a couple of Bedford VALs, including 141EJW , and 279HLC a beautiful-ugly Reliance with Duple Continental bodywork, all painted in the fawn and red livery. Expansion occurred rapidly, and more secondhand VALs, Leyland and AEC heavyweights plus Bristol KSW and AEC Renowns (ex- West Bridgford UDC) arriving shortly.A Bedford OB HWW642 was added for publicity purposes. An Atkinson wrecker even passed into ownership of Eastern National, for whom S&M often carried out hire work. In the mid 1970s at least two Leyland Leopards , ARN786/7C (numbered 7 and 8) arrived. 786 is seen here in Chelmsford. The smart seat head rest covers clash with the rather dirty appearance of this sloppily fuelled Leyland.

ARN788C went into the nearby fleet of JM Lewington of Cranham (Lewington Hire Services)
