TITLE Schools and Buildings of Keene NH (from Keene Illustrated - 60 Views)

CREATOR French, J.A., Keene NH

SUBJECT Buildings - NH - Keene Schools - NH - Keene Sculpture - NH - Keene

DESCRIPTION Tracings made from photographs by J. (Jotham) A. French of scenes of Keene New Hampshire. This panel shows the "Bank and Colony Block (the finest in the city) erected in 1870. This imposing structure furnishes accomodations for numerous public and private places of business, among which are the Cheshire Provident Institution for Savings; W.G. Hall and F.C. Hardy, dry goods dealers; G.G. Sawyer, druggist; and L. E. Mason, gent's furnishing goods. The second, third, and fourth stories are occupied by the Sentinel Printing Co., Cheshire Republican, and several offices. The new High School building, standing upon the site of the old Keene Academy, was erected in 1876 and is one of the best and most expensive educational edifices in the State. The Soldiers' Monument in Central Park is a fine work of art rising to the height of 21 feet. The granite base is surmounted by a colossal bronze soldier, eight feet in height, and is a conspicuous figure as one approaches the square from the South."
