DescriptionSt Michael and all Angels Shelf 079.jpg |
Church of St Michael and All Angels, Shelf, Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. Designed by Mallinson & Healey, and completed in 1850. All carving of 1850 is by Robert Mawer. Showing detail of font by Mawer. Around the bowl is a crowd of angels in deeply-cut bas-relief, including the Archangel Michael as a warrior, with helmet, sword and shield. The Gothic lettering around the top says: Likewise I say unto you there is joy in heaven over one sinner that repenteth (Luke 15:7). The lettering around the base says: One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism (Ephesians 4:5). Note: this artwork of 1850 has been covered with gloss paint, probably applied during the late 20th century. |
