Hello, AJCham!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Image restoration

[edit]

You did a "bang-up" job restoring this image of John C. Breckinridge. Really stellar stuff. If you have time, would you see what you can do with this image of Henry C. Burnett? It's the only one of him that I have found, and his article at Wikipedia is a featured article. I would like the quality of the image to match the quality of the article. If you don't have the time or interest, I understand. If you need to contact me, please use my Wikipedia talk page. Thanks. Acdixon (talk) 21:25, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much - I greatly appreciate the compliment; more so given my inexperience. As for the Henry Burnett image, it looks like it will be a much tougher job than the Breckinridge one, but I would love to give it a go. That is, if you don't mind waiting a while - it might be a few weeks before I get back to you with the finished product. I'll keep you updated. AJCham 23:02, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mind the wait at all; I knew it wouldn't be easy. Thanks for being willing to take it on. Acdixon (talk) 13:17, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Language policy

[edit]

Hi, in an effort to move the Commons:Language policy closer to completion, I have been editing it and cleaning it up for the last few days. I have tried to make the page as neutral and consistent as possible with the relevant policy and guidleine pages that it cross references.

I would appreciate it, as someone who has discussed some of these policies in the past, if you could look at Commons talk:Language policy and contribute your thoughts. This is the version that exists as I am writing it and I am encouraging everyone to consider the "static" page until everything gets sorted out.

Many thanks. Evrik (talk) 17:02, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:3rd_Temple_Ezekiel_B.Reinders_model.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Help:Small caps in SVG

[edit]

I am having some problem with applying small caps in normal SVG and Inkscape SVG documents. I have changed font-variant="normal" to font-variant="small-caps" and applied many fonts such as Arial, Times New Roman, Verdana, Helvetica. I saw the file File:Small caps for emphasis.svg uploaded by you. Please tell me how you have created this SVG document with small caps. --Amit6 (talk) 17:44, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

First, the file you mention was not made by me - User:A man without a country did that one. I did however make File:Smallcaps.svg.
I think font-variant:small-caps; will only work if the font has properly drawn small caps characters. When this isn't available some programs can cheat by downscaling regular upper-case characters, but I don't believe SVG supports this. This page lists fonts which support small caps natively and of those you mentioned only Times New Roman is there. This may be a recent addition to the font as on my machine Times New Roman does not have small caps, however I am running Linux so can't say how it should be on a Windows installation.
So what about the file I made? Regrettably I must confess that I cheated by using a smaller font size for the "lower case" letters. If you look closely at the file you'll see that the results are less than desirable as the small letters are weighted differently from the large ones. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Perhaps try asking A man without a country? Regards, AJCham 19:45, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
