He received his BA degree in 1976, M.A. degree in 1978, both from the University of Tokyo, Japan, and had the Doctor of Engineering Degree in 1991 from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan.During 1978 and 1989, he was research scientist at the Central Research Institute of the Electric Power Industry. During 1990 and 2003, he was a professor of University of Tsukuba. During 2003 ans 2018, he was a professor of Tokyo Institute of Technology. Currently, he is a professor of Chiba University of Commerce (CUC), Japan. He is also Professor Emeritus of both Tokyo Institute of Technology and University of Tsukuba. His research interests include Agent-Based Modeling in Socio-Technical Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Evolutionary Computation, Computational Organization Theory, Knowledge System Development, and Service Science.He is a member of the editorial board of major AI-related academic societies in Japan and a member of IEEE and PAAA (president).

Expert systems techniques in Artificial Intelligence give an effective way to implement sophistic... more Expert systems techniques in Artificial Intelligence give an effective way to implement sophisticated software systems. One of the difficulty to apply expert systems techniques to decision making is caused by the fact that some of the knowledge intrinsically has uncertain information. This paper proposes a new method which uses the Analytic Hierarchy Process (All?) for handling uncertain knowledge in frame-based expert systems for classification type decision making problems. The method consists of the following two phases: i) Construct a "part-or frame-taxonomy for the target problem; Then give consistent scores to each item in the frame by applying the AHP. Describe empirical rules; The rules first evaluate the scores in the frame, then derive a plausible conclusion. The proposed method gives some "rational" measures by means of the Consistency Index or the Consistency Ratio to uncertain knowledge, and furthermore it improves the limitation of the AliP i.e., the difficulty to construct a proper hierarchy and the simple decision criteria based on the additive value functions.

Service management at commodity goods retailers requires various kinds of strategic knowledge. Th... more Service management at commodity goods retailers requires various kinds of strategic knowledge. This paper focuses on the (dis)advantages of mileage point and discount services. To uncover the characteristics of the two strategies, we are developing an agent-based simulator to analyze the behaviors of competing retailing stores and their customers. The retailer agents adaptively increase or decrease sales promotion of mileage point service and discounting based on their experiences and strategies to acquire customers. Customer agents, on the other hand, make a decision to choose one of the two retailers to repeatedly purchase daily commodities based on customer types and utilities. To explore the better strategies of retailers, we have conducted intensive simulation experiments. Our computational results have shown that the emergence of retailors’ cooperative behaviors and their stable relations strongly depends on to what extent the retailers decide the discounting rather than mileage point strategy at the very first stages.

However, the importance of the modeling methodology has not been common yet even in the academic convergent technology societies. The paper discusses the principles, strength, and weakness of ABM. The paper also describes the role of simulation sciences in social system domains and how ABM should be a new standard of such analysis.

The need for this research arises from the fact that studying service ecosystems has become a critical need in the modern service economy. Adopting the view that a service ecosystem is a complex adaptive system of interacting service systems, we propose Agentbased Modeling methodology as a potential candidate for service research. Our agent-based model simulates an artificial market, in which one hypothetical service is being offered and customer agents interact with service provider agents to co-create value. The design of the model takes inputs from the service dominant logic, Kauffman's NKCS model and the ISPAR model of service system interactions. The simulation results reveal that the evolution of service providers follows a life cycle pattern, which we call the Service Life Cycle. We propose the SLC to be used as a reference to evaluate the performance of service providers in a service ecosystem, initiating a novel S-D logic based discussion on sustainability of business firms.

After the success of the first workshop of Agent-based approach in Economic and Social Complex Sy... more After the success of the first workshop of Agent-based approach in Economic and Social Complex Systems (AESCS) in Shimane, 2001, we have held a similar workshop in Niigata, 2003. The title is International Workshop on Agent-Based Modeling. The aims and scope are summarized as follows: Agent-Based Modeling has become one of major techniques to design and analyze complex adaptive systems including societies, economics, organizations, business management, Web applications, and the other engineering fields. The objective of the Workshop is to continue the efforts to foster the formation of an active multi-disciplinary community on multiagent, computational economics, organizational science, social dynamics, and complex adaptive systems, in conjunction with the 17th annual conference of JSAI, the largest AI related annual conference in the Pacific Asia region. At the workshop, we have had twelve oral presentations. They were pearly reviewed after the workshop, and then we have decided to accept the following five papers for the inclusion of these post-proceedings:

The authors and G-Search Limited are collaborating to develop a search engine "JDream Expert Find... more The authors and G-Search Limited are collaborating to develop a search engine "JDream Expert Finder" (JDEF) as an outcome of the project-8 in the Life Intelligence Consortium (LINC). JDEF has a function to find young promising researchers, who, so far, have only a little publication in the literature database of Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Using conventional citation indicators such as h-Index, it is inadequate to measuring young researchers' performances. Therefore, we have focused on the betweenness centrality in co-authorship networks as an alternative indicator. As JDEF has utilized a growth model of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) research fellows, thus, it is able to search the other young promising researchers from the JST database.

Validating the Performance of a Case-Based Reasoning System

When we use Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) for practical applications, it is often the case to implem... more When we use Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) for practical applications, it is often the case to implement two kinds of problem solvers: casebased one and knowledge-based/conventional one. The complex integration of such plural reasoners often causes serious VV~T problems: performance of problem solving, quality of solutions, and so on. In this paper, we ~ldress the performance validation problems of a CBR system. This paper presents a blackbox validation approach to quantitatively analyze the performance and proposes three kinds of performance measures. The proposed measures are then applied to validating a CBR system: IRS-CHR (Intelligent Information Retriever with a Case-Based Reasoner). From the experimental results, we conclude that (1) IRS-CBR has succeeded in both speed-up and memory-based learning, and (2) the proposed measures are useful for validating a CBR system.

This paper discusses a novel approach to a business simulator course. The course we are developin... more This paper discusses a novel approach to a business simulator course. The course we are developing consists of (i) Simple gaming experiment among multiple students using Alexander Islands, a tiny business simulator on the WWW; (ii) Lectures to let students to understand the core concepts of systems management through the simulation; and (iii) Home-made simulation model development by the students themselves using a business model description language (BMDL) and a business model development system (BMDS). Our course is unique in the sense that, through the business simulation, we aim to develop students' skills (1) to implement their own specific models of business firms, (2) to develop information systems for the firms, and (3) to understand business processes among companies. This paper describes the background and motivation, basic principles, the architecture and implementation of BMDL/BMDS, and experimental results.

We focus on the principles of Inverse Simulation and Genetics-Based Validation. In conventional artificial society models, the simulation is executed straightforwardly: Initially, many micro-level parameters and initial conditions are set, then, the simulation steps are executed, and finally the macro-level results are observed. Unlike this, Inverse Simulation executes these steps in the reverse order: set a macro-level objective function, evolve the worlds to fit to the objectives, then observe the micro-level agent characteristics. Another unique point of our approach is that, using Genetic Algorithms with the functionalities of multi-modal and multi-objective function optimization, we are able to validate the sensitivity of the solutions. This means that, from the same initial conditions and the same objective function, we can evolve different results, which we often observe in real world phenomena. This is the principle of Genetics-Based Validation.

While teams are an essential means for developing products in organizations, how to assemble prod... more While teams are an essential means for developing products in organizations, how to assemble product development teams remains largely unexplored. According to the social network research, teams might be arranged in either closely connected or sparse structures. Conceptualizing a product development project as collective problem-solving endeavour, we develop a computational model of these projects in which a number of designers, who are arranged in teams with a particular structure, conduct search over an NK(C) performance landscape. Simulation of this model enables us to compare the design performance of teams with either closely connected or sparse structures. Our results indicate that how effectively organizations can integrate design solutions determines which of these two structures results in higher development performance. In addition, with our simulation model, design performance of strategies that employ both closely connected and sparse teams, is contrasted with that of those policies which solely use either of these structures. We find that, regardless of product development project integration capability, strategies that simultaneously utilize both closely connected and sparse teams are likely to achieve higher development performance than the other strategies that only use teams with one particular structure. We discuss the implications of our findings in managing product development project.

In a social simulation of infection control policies using an epidemic model, it is necessary to ... more In a social simulation of infection control policies using an epidemic model, it is necessary to consider the latent perspectives of stakeholders focusing on various costs or effects. Therefore, we classify the simulation results produced by various combinations of control policies from the perspective of latent evaluation. In this paper, we use the data envelopment analysis (DEA) method to classify the results of epidemic control simulations. DEA is an analytic method that measures and compares the efficiency of multiple input multiple output systems' performance data. From various latent evaluation perspectives, DEA classification allows us to endogenously extract knowledge about the superiority of each control policy over the others from various latent evaluation perspectives. This approach is a good example of classification and knowledge extraction for a set of social simulation logs.

Customer Engagement has gained attention recently in the study of customer loyalty as a process that enables to understand and measure the impact of the depths of customers emotional responses to consumption situations on their intention to retain with a particular brand. However, there is no adequate research that deeply investigate the process of engagement, especially in dynamic, competitive and complex market environments. We address this research gap by creating an agent-based artificial market model. In doing so, we base our model on Service-Dominant Logic, which offers a novel lens to look at markets and their interactions and on the customer engagement process model of Bowden to implement customers engagement with a brand. This paper basically presents a logical discussion on the formulation of the model and some initial outcomes.

This paper investigates market microstructure in an experimental artificial futures market using ... more This paper investigates market microstructure in an experimental artificial futures market using the data generated by the submitted trading agents in two laboratory experiments. Since our previous analyses reveal that the price series successfully replicate so-called "stylized facts" in some regards, the aim of this study is to check whether such phenomena are also observed at microlevel. Our empirical results confirm that although there are locally mispricing effects of several trading agents, in most cases the market liquidity improves over the rounds. Future perspectives of agent-based computational finance and experimental economics are also discussed.

We find that, regardless of product development project integration capability, strategies that simultaneously utilize both closely connected and sparse teams are likely to achieve higher development performance than the other strategies that only use teams with one particular structure. We discuss the implications of our findings in managing product development project.

In a social simulation of infection control policies using an epidemic model, it is necessary to ... more In a social simulation of infection control policies using an epidemic model, it is necessary to consider the latent perspectives of stakeholders focusing on various costs or effects. Therefore, we classify the simulation results produced by various combinations of control policies from the perspective of latent evaluation. In this paper, we use the data envelopment analysis (DEA) method to classify the results of epidemic control simulations. DEA is an analytic method that measures and compares the efficiency of multiple input multiple output systems' performance data. From various latent evaluation perspectives, DEA classification allows us to endogenously extract knowledge about the superiority of each control policy over the others from various latent evaluation perspectives. This approach is a good example of classification and knowledge extraction for a set of social simulation logs.

Customer Engagement has gained attention recently in the study of customer loyalty as a process that enables to understand and measure the impact of the depths of customers emotional responses to consumption situations on their intention to retain with a particular brand. However, there is no adequate research that deeply investigate the process of engagement, especially in dynamic, competitive and complex market environments. We address this research gap by creating an agent-based artificial market model. In doing so, we base our model on Service-Dominant Logic, which offers a novel lens to look at markets and their interactions and on the customer engagement process model of Bowden to implement customers engagement with a brand. This paper basically presents a logical discussion on the formulation of the model and some initial outcomes.

This paper investigates market microstructure in an experimental artificial futures market using ... more This paper investigates market microstructure in an experimental artificial futures market using the data generated by the submitted trading agents in two laboratory experiments. Since our previous analyses reveal that the price series successfully replicate so-called "stylized facts" in some regards, the aim of this study is to check whether such phenomena are also observed at microlevel. Our empirical results confirm that although there are locally mispricing effects of several trading agents, in most cases the market liquidity improves over the rounds. Future perspectives of agent-based computational finance and experimental economics are also discussed.
