In Greek mythology, Iris linked the gods to humanity. I always think of this when I make irises, it’s become a part of this flower’s symbolism for me. Iris is a messenger god, like Hermes. She would travel from earth to the over and under worlds of the gods, bearing our prayers and pleads, advocating for us or sometimes granting our requests herself, if she could. Rainbows were how she travelled, and also a sign that the gods had heard you. And so it is too in the range of hues of her flower...
The iris flower is named after the Greek goddess Iris who carries messages of love from heaven to earth using a rainbow as her bridge. Irises are named after her because they bloom in just about all the colors of the rainbow.
