For instance, the refineries discharge phenol into the atmosphere during every production day and it is inhaled by all persons living in neighbouring communities. Inhaling phenol and other gaseous products have repercussions on people’s health, congestion and complications of the upper respiratory system and medical bills that accrue to the family. There are also economic costs resulting from the reduced yield and catch in the fisheries. The most frequent pollution indicators associated with the refineries production process are oil and greases, cyanide, sulphide, chromium and phenol.
