With COP29 Azerbaijan around the corner, NewClimate experts round up key topics to watch and the actions we should – or should not – take to keep the 1.5°C goal alive in this blog post (🔗 https://lnkd.in/gUPjAb9F) ➡ New cycle of NDCs  "In this critical moment, it is important that all governments commit to ambitious climate targets for 2035 and strengthen their 2030 targets, incorporating the outcomes of the Global Stocktake: doubling energy efficiency, tripling renewables, and phasing out fossil fuels to put the world on a net-zero emissions pathway for 2050," María José de Villafranca said. ➡ COP29 presidency’s initiatives  “COP initiatives have helped governments and non-state actors to explore higher ambition in specific sectors and thematic areas. COUNTRY ANALYSIS: #Türkiye’s climate policy: the good, the bad & the ugly. 120GW Wind & solar target by 2035 good, but 150GW shld align w #1o5C Overall rating still ‘Critically insufficient’, current policies improved to current ‘Highly insufficient" Efforts to increase fossil gas prodn & continued coal use undermine Türkiye’s #NetZero commitment. Türkiye's NDC shows little to no ambition to align w 1.5°C, allows emissions to continue rising & will be easily overachieved. If Türkiye is serious about its net zero by 2053 commitment it will need a much stronger 2030 target, a coal phase-out plan, and to stop investing in fossil fuels.
