Vorlage:Multiple issues The European Dairy Association (EDA) is the voice of the milk processing industry in the European Union. Its members are the national trade associations for dairy processors in the EU Member States. The association’s daily work is representing the interests of the European milk processing industry (cooperative and private dairies) through lobbying the European institutions. EDA’s headquarters are located in the Schuman area in Brussels close to the European Commission Berlaymont building. The legal status of EDA under Belgian law is association internationale sans but lucratif (AISBL).

History

The association was founded in 1995 by a merger of different dairy associations with ASSILEC,[1][2] the predecessor organisation of the European Dairy Association (EDA). Its founding members were the national dairy associations of the old EU-15 Member States. Since its foundation, the development of EDA has been aligned with the further enlargement of the European Union and the deepening of EU policies. Today, the membership of EDA consists of 22 national associations. Through a number of multi-country dairy processors, EDA covers the interests of dairy processors in all 28 EU countries. In 2012, Michel Valet (Lactalis, France) was appointed EDA Chair.[3]

Action

EDA voices the priorities of the milk processing industry on a EU level and shapes EU strategies. On behalf of and in close cooperation with its members (national dairy associations), the association acts and interacts with international and EU institutions.[1], non-governmental organisations, the international media and other relevant stakeholders (Codex Alimentarius, WTO.)[4]

EDA is registered in the European Transparency Register: 42967152383-63. Since the creation of the European Commission's Milk Market Observatory (MMO) on 16 April 2014, EDA has been appointed member of its Economic Board.[5] EDA Chair Michel Nalet (Lactalis, France) was elected Vice chair of EU Commission's Civil Dialogue Group on Milk (DG Agriculture and Rural Development) on 12 January 2016.

Organisation

EDA governance is ensured by its Board, elected every two years by the General Assembly and composed of one representative from each EDA member federation. The operational management of the association is ensured by the Secretary General, Alexander Anton, and the Brussels-based Secretariat. EDA operates with: a Trade & Economics Committee and a Food, Environment & Health Policies Committee.

Under both committees, a number of working groups and task forces are active in specific sectors and topics like the Common Agricultural Policy, market management,[6] competitiveness,[7] the reform of the School Milk Scheme[15][16], the protection of dairy designations, the communication on nutritional benefits of dairy,[8] the inclusion of the dairy industry into the European Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) or waste management.

The association closely works with namely DG AGRI (Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development), DG SANTE and DG GROW. It regularly attends the European commission civil dialogue groups to exchange with the Commission on all the quesitons regaring the comon agricultural policy (CAP), including rural development, and their implementation. The European Dairy Association (EDA) runs a yearly Annual Convention along with a European Dairy Platform. The latest Annual Convention and European Dairy Platform organised by EDA took place in October 2015 in Edinburgh (UK). The next Annual Convention will take place in December 2016 in Nice (France). Every year in spring, EDA organizes a conference in Brussels. The debates focus on important dairy policy issues.

Membership

The membership of the European Dairy Association (EDA) is composed of the national dairy associations representing the national dairy processors (private companies and cooperatives). Its network covers 22 national dairy associations. EDA is a member of the EU umbrella organisation FoodDrinkEurope.
