Forces and Motion O Wow Moments

O Wow Moments are a series of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) videos created by the Children's Museum of Houston (and starring yours truly) that include fascinating facts and simple experiments you can try at home! This particular board contains activities focused around velocity, acceleration, forces, gravity, laws of motion, etc. Great for elementary and middle school kids. Check out the full list and more descriptions on the blog - www.cmhoustonblog.org.

Gyro Flyer
Check out our homemade version of a flying cylinder - flies far and only takes a piece of paper and some tape!
Spool Car Racer
In this O Wow Moment, we take a look at how wind-up toys work...by taking them apart! Then, we use the same physics principles of transformation of energy to create a wind-up toy of our own - the Spool Car Racer!
O Wow Moment: Coin Stack Challenge
Inertia allows us to do all kinds of fun things - like this little challenge. Can you get the card out from the middle of a stack of coins?
O Wow Moment: Can Crushers
Tired of having to crush your aluminum cans the old fashioned way? Well, why not let the 14.7 pounds per square inch of air pressure do the work for you! Check out this cool physics demonstration...
O Wow Moment: Balancing Sticks
I prefer the term "center of mass" over "center of gravity." Learn why in this video as well as how to make a cool toy that seems to defy gravity, but really just has a unique center of mass.
O Wow Moment: (Almost) Impossible Acts of Balance
Do you think you are pretty well-balanced person? Then try out these impossible acts of balance. Trust me, you'll never find standing on your tiptoes quite as difficult as when your toes are up against a wall. Of course, the final challenge is actually doable - if you are a woman. Sorry, guys!
O Wow Moment: The Gravity of the Situation
In this episode, we take the time to recreate Galileo's classic gravity experiment, although instead of stones I'm dropping water balloons and instead of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, I'm tossing them off the Children's Museum of Houston's Tot*Spot Balcony. Yeah, it was a lot of fun...I mean, scientific! Very scientific!
