Setting up a sketching palette with Holbein watercolor paints
I’ve been interested in Holbein watercolor paints for a while, since they’re often described as very transparent, very even paints, similar to the Schmincke brand that I use most frequently. I still had a metal palette around, and figured this would be a great little project to put together: building a sketching palette with around 25 colors (plus white), with Holbein paints in a metal palette that looks similar to the Holbein palettes out there.
Morning landscape sketch with a limited palette
This landscape sketch actually turned out quite nice, and I used a limited palette for it. I remember thinking that I need to share with you how interesting it can be to use just a mini palette with a few limited colors, and how this can make a sketch more cohesive. So I’m doing this now – it’s a great way to explore color. I’d actually like to share more about putting together these limited palettes, but this week will be about the landscape sketch.
How to put together a mini palette with limited colors
Last week I showed you how effective it can be to limit the colors on your palette for a sketch. I find it can be a good method to get better at mixing, and to really get to know your paints. As a side result, you will get more cohesive, harmonious sketches, and you won’t have to wonder which of your 5 blues to use (for example), because you might only have one. So you will learn something about the mixing properties of your colors, and ideally, learn more about color mixing itself.

Watercolor Travel Tools
Nothing is more satisfying than traveling to a new places and watercoloring/sketching while there. Here is a list of the supplies and tools that I recommend for your journey
Kremer Pigments Landscape palette - a review + painting demo
I recently got a small landscape-themed palette from Kremer Pigments and today I’m going to test it and paint a small landscape sketch with it. Kremer is a family-owned German company for pigments, paints and all kinds of materials for the restoration of traditional artworks. They specialize in historical and rare pigments, like real lapislazuli, smalt blue, genuine alizarin crimson, or historic vermilion. Read more on my blog and see how I use this palette for painting.
My mini travel sketching kit | lightweight portable watercolor gear
I always try to keep my tools very lightweight and minimal, and I thought it might be interesting to share what I took with me on the trip. A few years ago I shared a similar sketching kit, and my current selection of tools differs only slightly. When I go field sketching in the neighborhood, I try to keep my kit very simple so that it can fit into a fanny pack. For longer daytrips, I usually bring a backpack with a few more things (umbrella, camera, food, sitting mat).

The properties of color + how to mix colors
It’s useful to know a few basic terms and rules surrounding color, and to have an understanding of how you can mix colors. These mixes were done with watercolor, but can be produced with all kinds of media. My palette follows the classical setup: a cool and a warm yellow, red and blue plus a few extras for convenience. Warm and cool describes how the color temperature for these colors is perceived by the human brain (blue = ice, cold; red = fire, heat).

My current sketching palette (2023)
Get ideas for putting together your sketching palette. I’ve introduced a few new colors to my palette since last summer. I’ve added Dioxazine Violet back in, and added Indanthrene Blue and Manganese Blue. I’ve also added Jaune Brilliant. I’ve removed Quinacridone Violet, Cobalt Violet and Buff Titanium.
