Although originally located in Norway, Elijah's parents Mikael, a wealthy landowner and viking, and Esther, a witch, fled from Europe to the New World after the supposed death of his older sister, Freya, from the plague while Esther was pregnant with Elijah. They moved to the New World because a befriended witch named Ayana told them there was a land where everyone was healthy and strong. Elijah was born in the 970s in an area that later becomes known as Mystic Falls.Because Mikael believed that his beloved daughter Freya had died of an illness (although in reality and unknown to the rest of the family, she was taken by Esther's sister Dahlia as part of a deal to make Esther fertile), he hardened and became incredibly strict with his remaining children.Mikael began to train Elijah from a young age, wanting to make him a ‘strong warrior’ so he would survive. The older Elijah got, the more rigorous Mikael's training was. Elijah grew into an excellent warrior that fulfilled Mikael's standards and made him proud. At some point during Elijah's childhood, Mikael began to beat Niklaus and Elijah loathed Mikael for this and often tried to intervene. If Mikael was enraged too much, he didn’t hold back to also beat Elijah for protecting Niklaus. The beatings Elijah got were by far not as bad or severe as the ones Niklaus got but they were still enough to sow fear.Despite this, they were just a family trying to survive at a time when it was quite difficult to do so. And, for better or worse, they were happy. Although having left Europe behind, Elijah's family upheld the traditions and faiths of their ancestors and lived in peace.In 1000, a woman named Tatia settled down in the village Elijah lived in. She was a widow and already had her child, nonetheless, both Elijah and Niklaus fell in love with her and fought over her, although they never did this in front of Tatia. Tatia was the first woman Elijah has ever loved and he intended to marry her if she were to choose him.However, things changed when in 1001, Elijah youngest brother Henrik was killed by werewolves during a full moon. Although forbidden, Klaus and Henrik had snuck out to watch the werewolves transform where Henrik was accidentally mauled and killed.Instead of leaving the area and the potential threat of werewolves, Mikael's pride refused to resettle elsewhere. Grief-stricken, Mikael & Esther searched for a way to protect their family from the werewolves. Ayana refused her help and warned of the consequences without avail. In autumn of 1001, Esther created an immortality spell herself in order to give their children abilities of superhuman strength, speed, agility, and healing that would be even stronger than those of the werewolves. Esther called upon the Sun for life, and the white oak tree, long known for being one of the earth's eternal objects, for immortality, so that she and Mikael would never again have to suffer the grief of losing a child. In order to complete the ritual, Mikael had his children drink wine laced with the blood of Tatia, who was revealed to be a doppelgänger, before he then thrust his sword through their chests. They awoke in transition, and on their father's orders, drank Human blood in order to complete their transformation into the Original vampires.They tried to continue their normal life although they faced new difficulties because of their status as vampires, a violation of nature. Despite these difficulties and the trauma of what Elijah had happened and what he had become, he found happiness when Tatia finally chose him and declared her love to him.Shortly after becoming a vampire, one night when Niklaus made his first human kill, it triggered his werewolf side and revealed that Niklaus wasn't Mikael's son. Klaus went on a rampage in wolf form. When he awoke the following morning he was tended to by Elijah unbeknownst to them Tatia had followed them to see what happened and was frightened and disturbed when she saw the carnage. Elijah noticed her and followed her as she ran away in fear until she tripped and cut her hand. The smell of blood made Elijah lose control, despite wanting to fight it, and although Tatia tried to defend herself, he quickly overpowered her and drained her.A traumatized Elijah brought Tatia to Esther, hoping she could save her but it was already too late. Esther used the rest of her blood as part of the spell used to bind Klaus' werewolf side. An enraged Mikael also made Elijah help him in tying up Klaus so that his mother could do the spell, an action Elijah regretted for the rest of his life. Elijah suppressed the memory of how Tatia actually died believing he had compelled and not killed her in the woods and that Esther killed her when performing the hybrid curse.Shortly after, their family broke. Mikael tried to end Niklaus for being an abomination and Niklaus, feeling betrayed by Esther's binding spell murdered Esther in retaliation and framed Mikael for the act. Unknowingly of the action of Niklaus, Elijah, Rebekah, and Niklaus swore to remain together always & forever and ran from Mikael.In 1002, the siblings have made their way to South France. Unaware of their ability to compel people, Elijah took up the duty to stress regulation and rules to remain undiscovered and safe. Eventually, they killed noblemen and Rebekah proposed that they could take up false identities to live in a nearby castle. It was there were they accidentally discovered that their blood possessed the ability to heal and also turn people. Due to the compulsion, Elijah also learned that it had been Niklaus who had killed their mother. It was also there that Elijah, Rebekah, and Klaus sired the first vampires Tristan, Aurora, and Lucien. In an attempt to lure Mikael away, Elijah compelled them to believe they were the Mikaelson siblings.In 1114, the siblings have settled in Italy. Rumors of 'demons' had been spreading, mainly because of Klaus and Kol's violent behavior and the existence of other sired vampires. The siblings came across a group of hunters called 'the Brotherhood of the Five'. Rebekah fell in love with one of these hunters and Klaus and Elijah used that opportunity to learn their secrets as these hunters were nonordinary hunters. One night, however, they were ambushed and neutralized for the first time by White Oak Ash Daggers. Klaus was unaffected by the dagger thanks to his werewolf side and undaggered the rest of his siblings except Finn. The daggers remained in the possession of Niklaus.In the 1150s, Elijah and Klaus started to spread legends and rumors about the 'Sun And Moon Curse'. The curse decreed that the werewolves would only be able to turn into a werewolf on a full moon, and that the vampires would be weakened by the sun but that it was possible to break it. The reason for the invention of this curse was to ensure that the involved species (werewolves and vampires) would be on the lookout for a long-lost moonstone and doppelgänger over the centuries by making their discovery relevant to those species although it was only relevant to break the curse placed on Niklaus.

In the 1200s, Elijah founded a vampire society named 'The Strix'. Elijah hoped to find like-minded individuals to create a better world. However, Mikael finally caught them, slayed the society he had built, and forced the siblings to flee. The surviving members of the Strix were later found by Tristan who took control and corrupted the group into a more savage, ego-maniacal force that clearly ignored the initial purpose.In 1492 Elijah and Niklaus lived in England under the pretense of being noblemen. Coincidentally, the missing doppelganger was found when Katerina Petrova who had settled down in England after being exiled from Bulgaria, was introduced to Elijah by Trevor who in turn introduced her to Niklaus. Katerina was the key to breaking Klaus' Hybrid Curse through sacrifice. While Elijah was helping Klaus achieve his goal, he started to feel something for Katerina and tried to persuade Klaus to spare her or rather let him save her. Elijah’s plan was that the sacrifice would take place, but that Katerina would be brought back to life. Klaus denied Elijah's request. Somehow, however, Katerina had found out about the sacrifice and had fled with the help of Trevor along with the moonstone. Klaus assumed Elijah helped her because of their discussion the night before about sparing her life and forced him to find her, otherwise, he'll kill him. Elijah attempted to track down Katerina, but didn't manage to find her. After he returned without the doppelgänger, an enraged Klaus daggered Elijah for the first time.In 1546, Elijah was undaggered and lived with Rebekah and Klaus in Denmark. Kol lived with them when they settled down in Spain in 1695 before Mikael found them in 1702 due to Kol's escapades.In 1713, the siblings finally fled Europe and returned to the New World, now a French colony of Louisiana, off the shores of a town they have named New Orleans. They settled down and started to build up the city.In 1820, the Mikaelsons still resided in New Orleans. Klaus had brought a boy to the family which he named Marcellus and Elijah had fallen in love with a witch named Celeste who eventually warned him that Klaus is up to no good as he became more reckless and killed for fun. Elijah took the warning seriously and started to question Klaus, asking him if he wants word of a city littered with bodies to be spread and catch the attention of Mikael. Klaus in turn told Elijah that he has sent rumors that the bodies are a result of the witches seeking blood sacrifices for their rituals. Elijah was shocked by this since this would also endanger Celeste. A short time later he found Celeste murdered.One year later, in 1821, Elijah distracted himself by teaching Klaus's ward Marcellus different things. The growing bond between Marcellus and Elijah made Klaus extremely jealous since he had been hoping to be Marcellus' mentor. In a fit, Klaus undaggered Kol, and the two of them unleashed violence upon the city up to the point where Klaus had to realize that Kol is too wild especially after he threatened to kill Marcellus. Kol was daggered again and Elijah decided to isolate himself from Marcellus to allow Klaus to grow closer to the boy since it would make him a better person. Elijah solemnly sacrificed a close and friendly relationship with Marcellus for Klaus' benefit, treating Marcellus with indifference from that point on.In 1835, Marcellus was turned into a vampire, and Rebekah, who had started a relationship with Marcellus, was daggered. After Rebekah was undaggered in 1887, Elijah helped her reintegrate herself into New Orleans' society and they went to the opera house together.In 1914, Elijah met his older sister Freya for the first time, although he was unaware of her true origin and connection.In 1919 the situation in New Orleans became more difficult as different parties (the werewolves and the witches) wanted to have a say in New Orleans. Marcel returned from WWI and was integrated back into the family. While the Mikaelsons try to hold their power, Mikael unexpectedly showed up, surprisingly only wishing to talk with Elijah. Mikael declared that he was never after his true children and that he was proud to call Elijah his son. Klaus, however, needs to be erased and Elijah should help him with that. Elijah denied Mikael the request and told him that he would never betray Klaus. Elijah was staked by Mikael and when he woke up he immediately rushed to his siblings only to discover that Mikael was feeding from Marcel and starting to burn the city down. Elijah urged Klaus and Rebekah to flee while he tried to delay Mikael.In 1935, Elijah finally reunited with Klaus after successfully feeling from Mikael. All the past years, Klaus had made him believe that Rebekah was staying in Chicago and even faked letters from her to Elijah and he only found out when the two brothers argued.Somewhere in the 1950s, when Elijah tried to reconcile with Klaus, the latter told him out of spite that he had dumped their incapacitated siblings into the ocean. This led to Elijah distancing himself from Klaus entirely and serving his own interests only, namely Klaus' destruction in recompense for his lost family.In 2010, Elijah returned to Mystic Falls because he was informed of the existence of a new doppelgänger, Elena Gilbert. He finally saw the chance to exert his revenge on Niklaus but on the night of the sacrifice, shortly before Elijah killed Klaus, Klaus told him that their siblings are safe, leading Elijah to back down.Between mid-late 2010 and early 2011, Esther returned to kill her children, and Kol, Finn, and Mikael were killed in Mystic Falls.In 2011, Elijah joined Klaus in New Orleans after they discovered that Hayley Marshall was pregnant with Klaus's child. Elijah helped Klaus regain power up to the point Klaus's jealousy got out of hand because of Elijah's good relationship with Hayley. Klaus feared that his child will grow up to call Elijah father instead of him. Because of this, Elijah decided with a heavy heart that it was best to withdraw and leave. He left the city and moved to France before his niece was born.Elijah returned in 2019 to take his part of the Hollow before the Hollow is extracted and destroyed in 2026 with Klaus's sacrifice

He stays in contact with his family through Rebekah but is not involved in family matters beyond that as he decided it's best to stay away.

After Elijah learned that Klaus has thrown their daggered siblings in the ocean, hence having sealed their fate for eternity, Elijah swore to avenge his siblings by killing Klaus. Because of this, he's keen on finding the doppelgänger before Klaus does, ultimately planning to sabotage the sacrifice to take advantage of the only opportunity in which Klaus is weak enough to take revenge.

After Esther's return, Elijah questions her intentions, unlike his other siblings. Unknown to them, their mother plans on killing them by linking them all together with the help of Elena's blood. Because of the link, if one thing happens to either of the siblings, it will happen to the others as well. Elijah tries to find a way to undo this.

 THE CURE // TVD S4. 
Through Katherine Pierce, the existence of a cure for vampirism came to Elijah's attention. Knowing the potential danger such a cure would bring with it, Elijah teamed up with Katherine to secure it and bring it into his possession. However, his initial mission starts to become difficult after both of his siblings desire the cure for different reasons for themselves. Elijah isn't yet aware of Kol's death.

After Elijah learns from Rebekah that Klaus has gone to New Orleans to find out who is plotting against him, Elijah decides to follow him although he hasn’t yet decided if he stops or helps them. In New Orleans, Elijah learns that Marcel, the former protegée of his brother, is still alive & acts as the leader of the city as well as that werewolf Hayley is pregnant with Klaus’ child.

Elijah returns to NOLA for the first time in years after being asked to help in his family's fight to save Hope from the Hollow. Despite having never met Hope in person, he's willing to hold a piece of the Hollow's spirit in order to save his niece. Elijah thinks he's aware of the consequences of that spell, although he only starts to really realize it after the spell is done. The knowledge of never being able to see his siblings again leaves Elijah stunned and he promises himself that this won't be a goodbye forever.
