antiX

Last Update: 2024-10-06 23:59 UTC

antiX is a fast, lightweight and easy-to-install Linux live CD distribution based on Debian's "Stable" branch for x86 compatible systems. antiX offers users the "antiX Magic" in an environment suitable for old computers. The goal of antiX is to provide a light, but fully functional and flexible free operating system for both newcomers and experienced users of Linux. It should run on most computers, ranging from 256 MB old PIII systems with pre-configured swap to the latest powerful boxes. 256 MB RAM is recommended minimum for antiX. The installer needs minimum 2.7 GB hard disk size. antiX can also be used as a fast-booting rescue CD, or run "live" on a USB stick, with or without persistent file storage.

Popularity (hits per day): 12 months: 15 (497), 6 months: 16 (500), 3 months: 14 (517), 4 weeks: 15 (490), 1 week: 22 (475)

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

antiX:
A lightweight OS with highly configurable lower-end desktop environments (DEs) avoiding 'systemd' init by design.
When compared to the previous versions, the packages have been updated, more GUI tools to perform maintenance and configuration.
Overall, an evolution of the OS, no revolution.

Pros:
P1) lightweight OS, hence suitable for older HW
P2) many custom scripts/GUIs to handle make some maintenance tasks easily doable without resorting to console
P3) built-in advert blocker (edits of /etc/hosts)
P4) several editions: full (recommended for newcomers), base, core and net.
P5) runit + SysVinit and several (un)official init variants as a test-bed
P6) custom kernel(s)
P7) many live-USB-system capabilities, e.g. can be installed on a USB stick and updated as an up-to-date live medium
P8) friendly community/forum interaction

Cons|Beware:
C1) some may desire a more full-fledged DE with all the bells and whistles (some of them can be installed in antiX but not officially supported, i.e. in case of problems you usually get support on the forum but its scope may be limited since not all users may be familiar with that particular DE)
C2) X11, no official release with wayland (some users experimented with wayland)
C3) if you require packages dependent on 'systemd', you are out of luck if 'systemd' is a hard-dependency (though snaps can be made to work with some user intervention, best used as permanently unsquashed), then MX Linux may be a better alternative for you.

Notice that P1) does not mean that browsing web is made more lightweight - the underlying OS consumes less resources but modern browsers and web-pages have become resource hungry irrespective of the underlying system.

Disclaimer:
I've been a user of antiX for quite some time on mostly lower-end HW (starting my Linux experience with Manjaro, trying out *buntu, namely Lubuntu, and Debian), originally using stable and testing, currently using stable only.

antiX gets a 9/10 for:

1) Works right from the start without having to do any configuration.
2) Installation is straightforward and easy to navigate.
3) Wifi connection was simple.
4) Default apps pretty much cover all the bases for my casual use.
5)The antiX people made adding new apps easy, but synaptic and apt are there if you prefer.
6) Don't let the small size fool you, antiX is feature rich.
7) Performance is fantastic on older hardware - dual core, 2gb RAM, 16gb SSD.
8) Documentation, user forum and support is better than expected for a small relatively obscure distro.

And finally,

9) antiX works almost perfectly on an old Samsung xe500c12 Chromebook with flashed firmware with only a few minor issues. To get the sound to work there's a WeirdTreeThing script that performs some sort of magic for the sound system. And the sd card port doesn't get recognized, I haven''t really spent any time on that yet so it might be a simple fix. Other than that, the webcam works, mic works, speakers and headphone port work. USB ports work.

I tried about a half dozen distros on my flashed Chromebook before booting antiX. I was impressed right from the start with the antiX desktop, startmenu, navigation layout and performance and that antiX recognized all the peripherals like mic and webcam etc. .

I bought a dozen EOL Chromebooks for cheap (real cheap) at auction and my plan is to load them up with antiX Linux and put them back on the street. It's my opinion that a first time Linux user could use antiX just as it ships and if they just stick to the basics shouldn't have any trouble.

antiX is a 9 out of 10 because of its size to performance ratio, it's outstanding performance on old hardware and for having so many options to tweak the system to one's needs.

This distro is incredible. It brought back to life a very old notebook I had that ran nothing but Windows 7. The system is fluid and very beautiful. I'm currently testing it and want to see how it behaves on a PC with good hardware.
It's based on Debian, so it's highly stable. In addition, it's lightweight, fast, reliable and seems easy to learn.
The learning curve seems to be gentle, so this could become my main distro in a short time. I really think it's incredible and I recommend that you give it a try. You'll certainly be pleasantly surprised.
