FreeBSD

Last Update: 2025-04-24 08:21 UTC

FreeBSD is a UNIX-like operating system for the i386, amd64, IA-64, arm, MIPS, powerpc, ppc64, PC-98 and UltraSPARC platforms based on U.C. Berkeley's "4.4BSD-Lite" release, with some "4.4BSD-Lite2" enhancements. It is also based indirectly on William Jolitz's port of U.C. Berkeley's "Net/2" to the i386, known as "386BSD", though very little of the 386BSD code remains. FreeBSD is used by companies, Internet Service Providers, researchers, computer professionals, students and home users all over the world in their work, education and recreation. FreeBSD comes with over 20,000 packages (pre-compiled software that is bundled for easy installation), covering a wide range of areas: from server software, databases and web servers, to desktop software, games, web browsers and business software - all free and easy to install.

Popularity (hits per day): 12 months: 20 (374), 6 months: 19 (404), 3 months: 21 (416), 4 weeks: 38 (302), 1 week: 40 (321)

Average visitor rating: 8.69/10 from 68 review(s).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I just tried it after 25 years of using Linux. I know, took me long enough! :-) First off, great community; friendly and helpful. But that is probably because when I had questions, I'd tried a lot and didn't expect a magic wand to be waved.

Overall though, very snappy on the same hardware I've used Linux. You have to check what it supports, but I've gotten it running on Mac's (wifi is a no-go and touchpads are touchy). The best support are the Lenovo workhorses (T### laptops and M## desktops). Anything I've thrown at it has been fine.

Subjectively, performance is above average. Better than Windows without a doubt. Comparing to most Linux distros, it's still above average. Especially using XFCE or KDE.

Installing KDE or XFCE was simple; maybe a bit of research to make sure I got everything. There are also good setup scripts out there, just not built in. Also, there was nothing I couldn't do on it. Though I don't use anything niche and can adapt to differing apps for the same purpose. I don't game or do video editing.

Last thought is that it is rock solid. Leave it on for weeks. I didn't leave different desktop environments on it at once, but I had no issues using apps that didn't come with the DE. And, no issues installing/uninstalling/reinstalling anything really. That rock solidness is up time length and no crashes/conflicts with the apps you install.

In the end, I'd say Arch is the closest comparison because of the adaptability and DIY nature. FreeBSD gives you slightly better stability and a bit less opaqueness.

My new daily driver pretty solely solely for the 1st rate ZFS support. Actually like OpenBSD a bit more but was tired of booting into another OS to back up my home NAS also using ZFS. I still run a couple of OpenBSD vms under bhyve which is definitely an improvement over OpenBSD vmm. FreeBSD is definitely faster than OpenBSD and with jails and bhyve can work around its often times more mediocre approach to security than OpenBSD. Still FreeBSD is a bit more modern (ZFS, nfsv4 support, better virtualization support) which I can appreciate. Still any BSD is better than linux and crummy systemd though. And BTRFS is a joke compared to ZFS.

Works decently - some inevitable rough edges. Good hardware support - although I wouldn't attempt to use it on hardware that just came out. Stable, fast and reliable. Been using for 15 years. Rarely ever have any issues with it.

Probably one of the best things though is how unified the project is. It's a complete system and everything centers around it, including the many ports/packages. No worrying about distros and inconsistent package availability.

I should point out that FreeBSD is about being an excellent, free, open source Unix. It is not, nor was ever intended to be a free Windows replacement. If that's your expectation then you are at the wrong place.
