Vanilla OS, a fixed-release distribution based on Debian (formerly Ubuntu, prior to version 2) with the GNOME desktop, is an immutable operating system. The core parts of the system are locked down to prevent unwanted changes and corruption from third-party applications or a faulty update.
To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
Colour scheme:green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Visually, Vanilla OS is absolutely one of the most polished distributions; everything feels like it fits together, yet it doesn't stray too far from vanilla GNOME with extensions either. It is simple, clean, and cohesive.
The primary downside (to me) is the high storage requirement of 50 GB for an install (now although it doesn't use all 50, those are reserved for the OS, and this is quite of good chunk of a 256 GB or 512 GB drive).
The experience is overall quite hassle free, apart from certain aspects of software development that may be made more difficult such as lacking certain system libraries in a container, but lacking certain other libraries on the host, meaning container exports must be used to have all dependencies accessible to the compiler (though this is quite common across all immutable distros). For fairly average usage not involving software development though, it is no more trouble than any other user friendly distro (in fact probably less due to the stable nature of atomic updates).

I really wanted to load it on my multi-boot linux test machine.
The installer really sucks.
It wanted a separate partition for /boot, /root and /var.
I was able to have a separate partiton for /boot-efi, /root, and swap.
Never did figure out how to put /boot, /root, and /var, all on partition 3, like I do on all other linux OS installs!
Does an installer really have to be that complicated.
The other thing is the .zip, instead of .iso.
I was able to use file roller to break down the .zip, but just more confusion.
The system doesn't auto recognize time zones, wifi, etc.
So Vanilla Linux, goes in the scrap bin!
Which is a real shame.
There is a need for a bare bones Debian Linux with gnome.
So far my go to, is Manjaro, Mint LMDE with self loaded gnome desktop, PopOS, Tuxedo, and a few more.
Was hoping to add Vanilla, to the list.
I gave it a 5 instead of a 2, because it did load from usb.
It let me look at the system.
But, I couldn't load it, and didn't want to spend all day beating on it!

Tried installing on 2 different laptops and a desktop, failed all 3 to install. On laptos it complained t could not find the drive after the installer partition it, which I could see after when I was looking into installing anything else to the laptops... so for some reason the weird installer can't keep track of what it was doing. Error log was not helpful, add to this that the thing does not have a live mode for one to try and diagnose while installing on the same device one is installing. Seemed insteresting but I can't recommend if I can't install on various machines.
