It revived an old Chromebook that, in a way, has become my daily driver. I'm constantly amazed by how much more capable this little piece of hardware has become ever since I installed Xubuntu. It runs smoothly and never crashes. It deals well when I burden it with too many tasks at once. The energy management and battery life are superb — far better than when I originally brought the device. I chose Xubuntu because it is fully featured and yet has even lower memory and space requirements than Mint Xfce (my natural choice). I have not missed Mint! The minimal install is also a fantastic option if you have only 24gb to play around on the device, as I did. I must thank Xubuntu for making me realise I don't quite need that new device. Honestly, I was starting to think it didn't exist. Then I gave XFCE a real shot. My old laptop, a trusty but aging machine, was starting to feel sluggish with heavier desktops. I figured, 'what the heck, let's try XFCE.' And wow, I'm kicking myself for not trying it sooner. It's like my laptop got a new lease on life! Everything is just snappy. Opening applications, switching windows, even just navigating the file system feels noticeably faster. What really surprised me, though, was how much I could tweak it. I'm a bit of a control freak when it comes to my workflow, and XFCE let me set up everything exactly how I wanted. I customized the panel, added my favorite shortcuts, and even gave it a fresh, clean look. It didn't feel like I was sacrificing anything for the speed boost. And the stability? Forget about it. I've been using it for months now, and I haven't had a single crash or weird glitch. It just works, plain and simple. Honestly, I was expecting something bare-bones and utilitarian. What I got was a fast, reliable, and surprisingly powerful desktop environment that I can customize to my heart's content. Oh, but if you want the best of the best, you gotta try the "Xubuntu Minimal" version (formerly called "Xubuntu Core"), that one truly really is a zippy, solid, lean, mean distro. This is my top choice for lightweight, fast, strong distros after years of distro-hopping. My second would be Sparky-Linux, my third choice perhaps Trisquel-Linux.
