What does work, though, is rubbing alcohol. It's also known as isopropyl alcohol or ispropanol. No, this isn't the kind you drink. Rubbing alcohol dissolves polymer clay, alcohol inks, paint, varnish (even dried varnish), liquid clay, and even uncured resin. It's an excellent solvent and it works VERY well as an all-purpose cleaning agent for your polymer clay tools and work surface. It also works wonders for smoothing fingerprints or removing lint from your UNBAKED polymer clay creations. Alcohol won't ruin your manicure or dissolve your tools.
