Cape Code House
New England Architecture. In the late 17th century, Puritan settlers brought the English cottage concept to Massachusetts, adapting it for New England winters. This functional design was named the “Cape Cod House” in 1800. In the early 20th century, architect Royal Barry Wills revived the style, adding modern amenities like garages and second-floor dormers, which transformed attics into livable spaces. After World War II, the Cape Cod style saw another revival in suburban developments like Levittown. Originally a simple, symmetrical, one-floor structure with a central chimney, the Cape Cod house was easy to build, heat-efficient, and adaptable for expansion.
