Let’s be honest about this black and white trend that’s been dominating design lately. It’s been like a security blanket for designers (and even homeowners) who get nervous when it comes to making colour choices. That's because it feels safe. But did you know that it's already dated?
Colour trends have been warming up for a few years now as the either-paint-it-white-or-black-trend quickly wanes. And along with the comeuppance of warm neutrals is the expected confusion around describing nuanced colours. Clients in my eDesign department have been asking for “darker whites” and “creamy neutrals” for a few seasons now. And it is clear that it’s an emergency to get my System for Understanding Undertones out into the world at large quickly!

Which fireplace works with my house?
Design is personal when you decorate. But if you don’t know how to decorate, or you choose furniture that is the wrong style, scale, size or colour, well that’s when you end up spending a lot of money on stuff you’re not real happy with in the end. This builder-chosen linear fireplace design has to STOP. I’ve been seeing this fireplace too much. So much so, that I need to flat out tell you right now to NEVER let your builder install this in your house.

Which fireplace works with my house?
Design is personal when you decorate. But if you don’t know how to decorate, or you choose furniture that is the wrong style, scale, size or colour, well that’s when you end up spending a lot of money on stuff you’re not real happy with in the end. This builder-chosen linear fireplace design has to STOP. I’ve been seeing this fireplace too much. So much so, that I need to flat out tell you right now to NEVER let your builder install this in your house.

Instead of black railings, do this: For a timeless use of black on a railing, you have few pretty options. Slim black metal spindles can be a timeless way to incorporate black, whether the handrail is black or wood.
Instead of black hardware and faucets, do this: Stick with timeless silver finishes for plumbing fixtures, such as chrome and polished nickel. They look much softer in a timeless white or cream bathroom. Cabinet hardware will also have more longevity in soft silver or brass finishes.
