Tiara - Gloucester Honeysuckle (UK)

The Gloucester tiara ornamented with a graduated frieze of styled honeysuckle. The central ornament is made to be separable. Made 1913/14 from diamonds taken from Queen Mary's County of Surrey tiara & was a present to the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (Princess Alice) on their wedding. The Parure was then passed on to the current Duchess of Gloucester, Birgitte, who wears it with two different central stones: Pink topaz & emerald - see Multi-gemmed board for pin of different stones

Queen Mary wearing the tiara - made in 1913/14 from diamonds taken from her County of Surrey tiara - that's become known as the Gloucester Palmette after being given to Princess Alice on her marriage to the Duke of Gloucester and now used by the current Duchess. Another good view of the classic version of the honeysuckle tiara gifted to the Gloucester family by Queen Mary back in 1935.
Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, wearing Queen Mary's honeysuckle tiara towards the end of her long life. She died aged 102 on 29th October 2004 and was laid to rest beside her husband and eldest son.
When Queen Mary gave Alice the honeysuckle tiara it was only with the central diamond motif. The sapphire brooch Queen Mary wore in it is thought to have gone to Princess Margaret, and the pink topaz centre piece was only given to Alice after Queen Mary's death in 1953.
Getting back to Queen Mary's honeysuckle tiara, she gifted this piece to her daughter-in-law, Alice Montagu Douglas Scott, who married Mary's third son, Henry, Duke of Gloucester, in 1935. Image of Alice dated 1948, wearing tha basic honeysuckle form of this tiara with the diamond centre motif.

Queen Mary liked to experiment with her tiaras, and this photo shows her wearing the Honeysuckle tiara with the central palmette mofit removed and a large facetted sapphire and diamond brooch in its place.
The current Duchess of Gloucester, Birgitte, has several ways of wearing the Honeysuckle tiara; here's the version where the central palmette section is removed and replaced with a cabochon emerald, which her late mother-in-law, Alice inherited from Queen Mary in 1953.
