Definition
Hippocampal memory prosthesis is a brain-machine interface device developed for restoring or enhancing memory functions (Berger et al. 2010, 2011, 2012; Hampson et al. 2012, 2013; Song et al. 2006). It is designed to circumvent damaged hippocampal tissue by reestablishing the ensemble coding of spike trains performed by a normal population of hippocampal neurons. The objective is to restore long-term memory function in a stimulus-specific manner using a multi-input/multi-output (MIMO) nonlinear dynamical model (Fig. 1).
Conceptual representation of a hippocampal memory prosthesis for the human. The biomimetic multi-input/multi-output (MIMO) model implemented in VLSI performs the same nonlinear transformation as a damaged portion of the hippocampus (red “X”). The VLSI device is connected “upstream” and “downstream” from the damaged hippocampal area through multisite electrode arrays
