a link between exercise and autophagy

First, the authors investigated whether autophagy can be induced by exercise. Using mice expressing the autophagosome marker light chain 3 (LC3) tagged with green fluorescent protein, they found that autophagosome numbers increased in cardiac and skeletal muscle after treadmill exercise. Autophagy was also triggered by exercise in tissues involved in glucose and energy metabolism, such as liver and pancreas. Similar findings were obtained by biochemical studies, which showed, for example, that exercise triggers the conversion of the non-lipidated form of LC3 to the autophagosome-associated, lipidated form.
