differences: A Journal of Feminist Cultural Studies was founded at Brown University in 1989 and has been housed in the university’s Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women since its opening issue. In the intervening years, the journal has benefited in every way from its engagement with Brown’s vibrant intellectual community. Visiting scholars and postdoctoral fellows, faculty members and guest lecturers, graduate proctors and student fellows have generously collaborated in the work of producing differences, proposing special issues and dossiers, contributing their provocative new work, enlivening and challenging the journal in a critical forum where the problematic of differences is explored in concepts and idioms ranging from the literary and the visual to the political and the social. This special issue celebrates differences’ history in this vital community by featuring the work of colleagues and interlocutors.
