Drumlane (Irish: Droim Leathain, meaning 'The Broad Ridge') is a monastic site and church located in Milltown, County Cavan, Ireland. Located at the site of what was once a priory, church and round tower which date back to c555. Drumlane reputed to have been founded by Saint Columba, although Saint Mogue is generally associated with the monastic foundation, evidence suggests that the foundation of Drumlane is older than his time.[1] In 1261 the monastery was reputed to have been burned by the O'Rourkes lords of Breifne during a fued with a rival clan of the O'Reillys of East Breifne.

Drumlane. Ruins of round tower and church.

The original buildings were made of wood, but were replaced with a stone structure in the 12th century when the priory was taken over by the Augustinians under the Augustine St. Mary monastic order from the abbey at Kells. Later in the late sixteenth century with the dissolution of the monasteries and re-granting of lands to Protestant settlers Plantation of Ulster. The church was then used for Anglican worship until the eighteenth century when a new Drumlane parish church was built and the old Drumlane church was un-roofed and later abandoned. The Round Tower is a tall circular stone structure that stands beside the church and is the only remaining round tower in the Church of Ireland Diocese of Kilmore.[2]
