Edward Francis Anhalt is an author, and president of Banking on Kids, a company that promotes fiscal responsibility in elementary and middle school students. He grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he attended Washington High School, and later graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin.[1]

He is married to Dr. Beverly Belfer, and is the father of Alexandra Anhalt.[citation needed] Edward F. Anhalt is a distant cousin of two-time Academy Award winning screenwriter Edward Anhalt.[2]

Education

He did an abreviated stint as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Shiraz, Iran. Upon his return, he earned a Masters of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a Doctoral Degree from Rutgers University.[3] He completed a postdoctorate at Lehigh University.[citation needed]

Banking on Kids

Anhalt is the president of Banking On Kids,[4], a company that helps K-8 students become fiscally prudent by opening student-run-banks in their schools.[5][6][7][8][9][10] Founded in 1995, Anhalt's initiatives represented an example of smaller banks becoming involved in education: In 1999, the organization started programs in 75 schools with the help of 15 banks in the Milwaukee area. The program sets many goals for students, such as opening their own savings account.[11] Anhalt believes the program is beneficial because it helps students set financial habits early on.[12][13] Anhalt has also stated that another goal of the organization is to reduce the use of check-cashing services, which he called "legalized loan sharking." Such services take a percentage cut from the value of the check, and to remedy this, more emphasis needs to be placed on individuals saving money.[14]

Event planning career

Since 1981 he has presided over a special events/marketing firm [Just Like Downtown Inc].[15][16] where he created and produced over 150 special events in the area of food, sports, and education. He created the [Great Rubber Duck Race] down the Milwaukee River, with the no. 1 duck winning a sportscar,[17][18] fishfry [Juneau the Best Fishfry?],[19] chili [Chili in Milwaukee, You Bet!], and frozen custard [Custard's Best Stand].[20] Working as a promoter, he worked with the Milwaukee County Stadium officials on a marketing idea that involved selling "discarded stadium sod" as souvenirs following the 1982 World Series.[21] He staged a scavenger hunt through the Milwaukee Public Museum, with the winner uncovering clues to cars and computers.[Now Museum-Now You Don't][22][23][24] He oversaw the [Wisconsin Farm Fund] enabling local farmers to raise monies during fallow harvests, worked with U.S Open winner Andy North to create the [Pro Golf Shoot Out], where local amateur golfers could try each week to best a visiting PGA golfer, who posted a score on local county golf courses.[25] He staged a video game expo,[26] created a giant flea market [Park-it Market] with over 10,000 visitors and 600 vendors,[27][28] and auctioned off 52 bachelors to 1,000 attentive ladies at the [Bachelor Auction] raising over $50,000 for Big Brothers-Big Sisters.[29]

He previously served as the Marketing Director for the Milwaukee Department of Parks, Recreation, and Culture,[30] Marketing Director for the King Solomon Mines in Eilat, Israel,[31] Education Consultant for the Greater Milwaukee Education Trust [defunct],[32] and Director of Special Events for the advertising firm Hastings & Doyle [defunct].[33]
