History

Elkhart Central High School is located in Elkhart, Indiana. Elkhart Central High School opened in the fall of 1972 when Elkhart High School was split into Elkhart Memorial High School and Elkhart Central High School. ==Mission Statement== Teach all students to think critically, to adapt to change and to work cooperatively as responsible citizens.

Controversy

On November 12, 2007, there was a reported gang fight that ocurred in the cafeteria during breakfast. Fourteen students were expelled, and twelve were arrested.

A 2007 story by the New York Times said that any high school with a 60% or below graduation rate was a "dropout factory." Central, for the 2006-2007 academic school year, had a 58% graduation rate. Many local news outlets saw the story and gave Central a poor representation.

The Mangy Lion

The Mangy Lion Trophy is awarded to the winner of the annual Central-Memorial football game. It is a carving of a lion's face inside of a glass case. The winner of the Mangy Lion Trophy for the 2007-2008 school year is Elkhart Central.

Longfellow Trophy

The Longfellow Trophy is awarded to the winner of the annual Central-Memorial basketball game. Central held the trophy for the 2006-2007 school year.
