The story begins in medias res with Chinaski receiving a call from Jon Pinchot, inquiring about a screenplay. From there, Bukowski in the guise of his alter-ego, Chinaski, tells the story of his one and only experience with the business of Hollywood production, including the setbacks, people involved, and his disillusionment with the whole process. As with any Bukowski novel, Chinaski is intoxicated throughout much of the story. He has however, calmed down since marrying a woman named Sarah.
