The detection in infrared by the [[Spitzer space telescope]], combined with the similarities of spectrum with Pluto yield a conservative estimate of 1500 km. This is similar to the size of {{mp|2003 EL|61}} making {{mp|2005 FY|9}} the largest known Kuiper belt object after {{mp|2003 UB|313}} and Pluto. However, should the albedo prove to be closer to that of [[(50000) Quaoar|Quaoar]] for example, the size of the object diameter could reach 3000 km.
