Education and early work
Bullock graduated from the University of Wollongong in 1994 with a Bachelor of Computer Science. His first job was at the radio telescope in Parkes notable because of The Dish. Specialising in ASP.NET, he wrote technical documentation for several companies[3] before working as an internet development consultant. He worked on early SMS technology for Optus, and was webmaster for ATSIC, where he was an early proponent of video streaming and other emerging technologies.[4]
He founded several startups including:
eWAY
In 1998, Bullock’s work developing an eCommerce payment gateway for a large insurer led to the formation of eWAY, which helps businesses accept credit cards online. The company has since expanded into New Zealand and the United Kingdom, recruiting more than 12,000 merchants.[7][8][9]
Business philosophy
In 2012, Bullock launched the "CEO Masterclass" – an educational 12-part series for business owners. Lessons are emailed to merchants when they join eWAY. The essence of Bullock's company strategy is as follows:
- Aim for superior product quality by focusing resources on core business (and making partnerships with industry leaders for everything else).[10]
- Use a diverse variety of marketing methods, including search advertising, social media and word-of-mouth marketing to attract clients.[11]
- Ensure that clients have access to immediate support, encouraging brand loyalty and repeat business.[12]
- Use detailed reporting tools to track revenue growth and customer demographics.[13]
Philanthropy
In 2012 Bullock prepared food for 1,000 underprivileged Australians as part of the CEO CookOff, raising over $14,000. The money was given to OzHarvest and Mission Australia, who provide food and shelter to the homeless.[14]
Via eWAY, Bullock also donated more than $15,000 to Ronald McDonald House Charities, which provide vital support for the families of sick children.[15]
Achievements
- 2008: Bullock's agreement with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia enabled merchants to apply for CBA merchant facilities through eWAY, the first such agreement in the world.[16]
- 2010: Bullock's partnership with American Express made eWAY the only Australian re-seller of the premium card scheme (excluding banks).[17]
- 2011: Bullock created Transactional Emails; email receipts which included ads for the merchant's other products and analytics to determine their effectiveness. eWAY was also listed in the BRW Fast 100.[18]
- 2012: Bullock proposed and implemented a new payment gateway business model in the United Kingdom. "Cloud payments" enable merchants to turn the gateway on and off and pay only for the hours they use (rather than paying a fixed annual or monthly fee).[19]
