== Description & behaviour ==
The onefin catshark is the only shark with 5 pairs of [[gill]] slits and one [[dorsal fin]]. The head is broadly flattened and spatulate, and the snout is elongated and usually longer than mouth width. The labial furrows are very long, uppers reaching upper symphysis. There is no color pattern, the single specimen being uniformly dark brown. The [[caudal fin]] has a distinct subterminal notch. The onefin catshark is a poorly known deep-water bottom-dwelling shark inhabiting insular slopes, possibly [[oviparous]].
The Onefin catshark is a small, dark brown [[shark]]. It only has five pairs of [[Gill|gills]] and one [[dorsal fin]] near its [[tail]]. It has an elongated and flattened [[head]] which is pointed at the [[nose]]. Its [[anal fin]] is notably long - larger than the [[Pelvic fin|pelvic]] and [[Dorsal fin|dorsal fins]]. The [[caudal fin]] is also elongated.<ref name=":0" /> The maximum known length of the catshark is 51cm.<ref name=":1" />

== Etymology ==
The scientific name '''Pentanchus''<nowiki/>' is possibly a mix between the word 'penta' from the [[Greek language|greek]] 'pente' meaning five, and 'anchus' a possible abridgment of the greek 'branchos' meaning gill. This would refer to the five pairs of gills the shark has, which would make the shark unique if it were a hexanchoid - the authors mistakenly believed this to be the case.<ref name=":1" />
