The Premiership Rugby A League was launched in 2003. It runs parallel to the Premiership Rugby and RFU Championship seasons. Split into North and South Pools, it comprises 13 sides. The 13 clubs select players from their Academy and First Team squads to make up their A League teams. This gives both young and experienced players the opportunity to play competitive rugby week in week out. Players from feeder clubs are allowed to play under dual registration for additional development benefit. Despite Bristol Rugby currently playing in the Championship, Bristol United have been included in the A League since its inception regardless of league status.

In the North Pool, teams play each other both home and away. In the South Pool, teams face each other once (home or away), the top five after this will then face each other once more in a second phase mini-league with the 6th and 7th placed sides playing each other twice more. The top two teams from each Pool then enter the finals stage where they will face their intra-Pool opponent in the semi-final before progressing to the final against a team from the opposite Pool.
