History
The first version of the site, nicknamed "RYM 1.0," allowed users to rate and catalog releases, as well as to write reviews, create lists and add artists and releases to the database.

Features
The main idea of the website is to allow the users to add music releases of many types including but not limited to albums, EPs, singles, mixtapes, DJ mixes, and bootlegs to the database and to rate them. The rating system uses a scale of minimum of a half-star (or 0.5 points) to a maximum of five stars (or 5 points). Users can likewise leave reviews for RYM entries as well as create user profiles. Rate Your Music is generated jointly by the registered user community (artists, releases, biographies, etc.); however, the majority of new, edited content must be approved by a moderator to prevent virtual vandalism.

Rate Your Music isn't all sunshine and roses, however. One blatant flaw is that, despite not being excluded from Internet archives such as Wayback Machine and Archive.is, the site is archive-proof due to the site's internal design. Attempting to save RYM with the Wayback Machine almost always results in an "IP Blocked" page, where "valid" captures are few and far between despite the deceptive abundance of captures. Archive.is doesn't do you much good, either, as the pages, for some reason, result in 403s and "not found yet" if you try to save a RYM page in that archive. Whoever runs this site, whichever admin of RYM who OK'd these restrictions, really went the extra mile to deter historians from saving the stats over time. Album of the Year is an objectively better alternative, as the pages are archiveable even by the Wayback Machine; use Album of the Year instead if you like checking song ratings and reading reviews.
