Overview

Dolphin show

Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium was opened in 2015 as a successor to Marinepia Matsushima Aquarium, which had been open for 88 years.

Commerson's dolphin and Finless porpoise are inhabited by individuals inherited from the Marinepia Matsushima Aquarium and fish that inhabit Sanriku.[3]

The facility is a two-story building with 100 fish tanks. Inside the building, there is a dolphin and sea lion show pool that can accommodate about 1,000 people.[4]

Raising blue sharks

As a fish of Sanriku, we are focusing on rearing and exhibiting blue sharks. In 2017, we succeeded in exceeding 246 days of Tokyo Sea Life Park, which is the longest rearing record so far, and succeeded in rearing 252 days.[5] In addition, the blue shark, which started rearing in 2018, succeeded in inhabiting 873 days until it died in December 2020, and the habitat record of captive blue sharks was significantly updated.[6][7]

The blue shark, which was the most alive in captivity, was captured in Shizugawa Bay on July 27, 2018 and taken to the Public Aquarium. The total length at the time of delivery was 51 cm (1.67 ft), the estimated weight was 345g, and the age was about 1 year old. After that, it lived for 873 days, but died due to factors such as disordered swimming due to dehydration. At the time of death, the total length was 114 cm (3.74 ft) and the weight was 4kg. This growth rate is said to be the same as that of wild blue sharks.[8]

Marinepia Matsushima Aquarium

Exterior of Marinepia Matsushima Aquarium

Marinepia Matsushima Aquarium (マリンピア松島水族館、Marinpia Matsushima Suizokukan) is an aquarium that once existed in Matsushima Town, Miyagi District, Miyagi Prefecture. It opened on April 1, 1927 and closed on May 10, 2015.

Marinepia Matsushima Aquarium was a public aquarium operated by Sendai express. In Japan, it was the second longest-running aquarium after Uozu Aquarium. However, in 2001, due to aging, we began to consider renewal.[9] After that, the number of visitors decreased due to the opening of Oga Aquarium Gao and Aquamarine Fukushima. In 2009, Sendai City announced plans to relocate the aquarium to Takasago Central Park in Sendai Port.[9]

However, in February 2010, the operating company Sendai express canceled its investment due to the lack of prospects for raising funds.[10] Then, in 2013, Marinepia Matsushima Aquarium participated in the management, and six companies including Yokohama Hakkeijima invested to establish "Sendai Aquarium Development Co., Ltd."[11] The new company built a new "Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium" in the hinterland of Sendai Port, where the Marinepia Matsushima Aquarium was supposed to move, and opened on July 1, 2015. Sendai express, which operates the Marinepia Matsushima Aquarium, will not invest in this, but the newly constructed aquarium will accept animals from the Marinepia Matsushima Aquarium.[12]

After the Great East Japan Earthquake

In 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake flooded the building and broke the circulation pump, killing animals such as Ocean sunfish, Jellyfish, Tropical fish, and Pygmy sperm whale.[13][14][15] As a result, we received new tropical fish and jellyfish from Kamo Aquarium and Osaka Aquarium.[16][15]
