Smoker

Smoker as a word is not actually found in etymology references being of modern construct. It does not appear in many of the professional reference texts either because it is a bigoted and demeaning term, when used in reference to a person. This defies modern cultural norms, which define the term as a person who smokes cigarettes thus smoker. Which would be in ignorance of the fact; the tobacco is burning, creating smoke, it is not the person who is actually smoking, which would demand a lot more concern for their well-being. People simply inhale and exhale the smoke produced by the burning of tobacco products. The earliest references to Non-smoker are found to report a non-smoker as a railcar where people who were bothered by tobacco smoke could find comfort in a “Non-Smoker”. According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the term dates back to 1846. This of course had no reference in respect to people, only to their preference to avoid the sight or smell of tobacco products. This was not the norm at the time as many people found the smell of tobacco smoke to be pleasing. For many, cigarette smoke had a purification quality, which survives today. It was largely believed to be antiseptic and directly related to the North American Indian tradition, of preceding a meeting with guests; they seek to bathe in the smoke to purify the mind. The term “Smoker” is one of the rare instances in which a word is invented to give meaning to its negative reference or “anti” or “Non” connotation. In reference to a rail car. The term non-smoker preceded the term smoker because prior to a non-smoker logically it could serve no purpose. In reference to people, the word was developed as an insult, which by it’s nonsensical nature, comparing someone to a locomotive as opposed to the passenger cars, where someone might be enjoying a cigarette, it simply made no sense. It appears the negative connotation in describing people, did not evolve seriously until much later, with controversy over it’s origins in the 1920s temperance movement or later in reference to Adolph Hitler’s fanatical anti smoking movement. Described by many historians as a reign of Healthism. The tobacco manufacturers simply utilized a common term “smoking”, in advertising their products unwittingly attaching what was eventually to evolve as a nurtured negative personal connotation “smoker” in reference to their clients. Until as recently as the mid to late 1990s Many people inhaled cigarette smoke next to Hospital delivery rooms and in the Doctor’s office, in fact ear aches were routinely treated by blowing tobacco smoke into the patient’s ear which offered moist insulation from the air and immediately eased the pain. The effects gained by use of tobacco products include a sense of calming of the mind when in turmoil, which allows reasoning to be, enhanced. Nicotine use is well known to be memory enhancing and neuro protective and is used in many drug products to treat neural compromising diseases. Traditionally Doctors recommended smoking [unofficially] for early onset Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s patients. Biologically Nicotine when burned produces nicotinic acid a vital component of human biology, which is not stored well within the body and needs constant replenishment. Nicotinic acid is more commonly known as Niacin or vitamin B3. The desired effect of tobacco use seems to stem from ion channel stimulation at the receptor, to initiate a number of bodily functions associated with the epithelium which regulates functions such as blood quality, heat regulation, blood pressure and heart rate in addition to [adrenal gland produced] adrenaline flow moderation, see [nicotine receptor AKA acetylcholine receptor or nAChRs]. In opposition to what many may perceive, a physical need to get high is not explained well by the term addiction, as we see with traditional drug abuse. Cigarettes produce a return to a more clear and cognitive enhanced state not a depreciated state, this is the desired effect, which depreciates over time. Using a cigarette serves to enhance both physical reactions and cognitive abilities which is an effect which is impossible to replace with existing alternative products. Observations that are more recent seem to support the calming effect is more a physiological reaction to the inhaled whole smoke. Cigarette smoke is in the majority comprised of CO2 and water [upwards of 95%] which reduces slightly the oxygen content in the blood, replaced with carbon dioxide [CO2] which by its reaction implies, a calming effect or de-stressor, more similar to very mild alcohol intoxication or light headedness. The CO2 in concert with the immediate effects of vasodilatation by nicotinic reaction, increases blood flow and heart rate speeding the CO2 to the brain. After a person is more accustomed to inhaling, the smoke, vasodilatation is less reactive and the lightheaded effect is no longer experienced, until someone stops inhaling the smoke for a period of time, and the more sensitized reaction is rekindled. It was not until Hitler’s propagandists who were heavily influenced by the global eugenics movement [combined with the early beginnings of healthism as a route to power] went to work, anyone seriously believed drifting tobacco smoke could do them harm. Supportive epidemiology opinions were created, which served as a precursor to “Protecting” people who did not smoke, by what was loosely described as science, a physical fear was borne. We saw during the war years Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin were staunch non-smokers who moved beyond the norms of social etiquette, whereas Churchill and Eisenhower defined their defiance visually, by smoking as a tool of signified independence and freedom. Wartime movies similarly glamorized tobacco use to equate; bravery as strength in the face of adversity, which served the tobacco industry for decades. This requires some explanation to find balance with the modern politically correct perspective. Eugenics or protection of the gene pool was an ill-conceived, vicious precursor to the built to specification baby, which divides scientific communities even today. Traditionally defined as an immoral act or playing god if you will, which expands the powers of bigotry and racism in the rights of imperfect or “flawed people”, as somehow less, than the rest of humanity, as a consequence of “unsupervised” conception and birth. More recently, the term smokers has been expanded to describe a lobby design. Whereas politicians can avoid the legal restrictions of “purchasing politics” with public funds, by employing made to order smoker groups, who redefine expectations and allow the politician who employed them, little choice but to be swayed by their own purchased intentions. Lobbies are often created to compliment a press release, with official sounding names to exaggerate their membership numbers and official stature. This deceptive tactic has allowed many of the advertising agency created news releases, Which employ focus groups to maximize the effect of their slogans. Such preparations so common of late, are presented in the form of late breaking news releases, to find wide media coverage and the desired effect among a non-suspecting public.
