In the earliest period, Telugu literature existed in the form of inscriptions, from around 300 BC{{citation needed|date=July 2018}}. These writings were written by the Mauryans, Satavahanas, and the Andhra Ikshavukus.

The Bhattiprolu writings were the first Telugu writings. The writings are written on six stones. These writings were found in [[Bhattiprolu]]. These writings date to between the 3rd and 1st centuries BCE, putting them among the earliest evidence of Brahmi writing in South India.
