Brand Lineage

In 2003, TORO Magazine entered into the Canadian marketplace as a glossy men’s lifestyle publication. During its print run, TORO garnered a number of accolades for its vision and style. During its four year run, TORO garnered more than 60 National Magazine Award nominations[1]. In 2007, TORO Magazine suspended publication – but Black Angus Media, a full-service digital media company that controlled TORO’s electronic rights, was interested in continuing its run electronically.

William Morassutti, Editorial Director and Executive Director of TORO Magazine, had co-founded Black Angus Media with TORO founder Chris Bratty in order to extend the brand into electronic and digital media. On May 21, 2008, Black Angus Media launched TORO as a web-only publication, TOROMagazine.com.

Content Overview

TOROMagazine.com’s original content lineup spans videos, blogs, photo galleries, live music, and graphic novels, making TORO a multi-dimensional, 21st Century brand[citation needed]. It’s office set-up located in downtown Toronto includes a state-of-the-art high definition video studio for production and post-production and a diverse stable of contributors, including writers, videographers, photographers, illustrators, and web designers. The production team includes editors and digital strategists – and the site’s strategic partnerships branch out to encompass advertising, marketing, and public relations firms.

Bad Beat City: An ongoing graphic novel serial about a group of young men who meet regularly for a poker game in Little Italy, and the various pitfalls and disasters they encounter both away from and at the poker table. A "bad beat" in poker is an agonizing loss that defies the laws of logic and/or probability.

Radar: TORO’s in-house editorial team selects and reviews their weekly entertainment highlights, focusing particularly on music, literature, and television.

Damage Control: Advice columnist Dave Eddie reflects, expands upon, and occasionally defends his "advice for guys in sticky situations" with TORO Editor-in-Chief William Morassutti acting as devil's advocate and sounding board.

Drinks: Comedian Jimmy Hogg delivers high-energy narratives inspired by beer, wine, and cocktails. A companion blog includes cocktail recipes, buying advice, and reports from the front lines of alcohol culture.

Food: Steve Ricci, executive chef of "Prime" at The Windsor Arms Hotel, offers 2-minute videos of easy-to-make meals for men with fast-paced lifestyles; an accompanying blog provides detailed recipes.

Gaming: TORO staff writer Jessie Skinner checks out the latest in video games with online video reviews about the newest releases.

Garage Band: Garage Band features live performances from a broad range of music acts, each filmed on high-definition video and broadcast weekly. Garage Band also features interviews and a behind-the-scene blog.

Health: Dr. Kate Greenaway dispenses advice on men's health issues. Her blog entries are driven by autobiographical details from her experience on the front lines at progressive medical clinics in North America.

Departures:

  • Rants: TORO contributors vent about topics and issues that get under their skin.
  • True Story: TORO contributors and visitors share "true stories" from their own lives. Embellishment is common and encouraged, though there is always at least a kernel of autobiographical reality to the tales.
  • Open Letter: A blog inspired by Saul Bellow's seminal novel ''Herzog''. TORO writers pen candid and uncensored letters to prominent figures both living and dead, real and/or fictional.

Poker: Author Salvatore Difalco writes a weekly blog that takes readers inside the psyches, strategies and jargon of poker, with lessons that apply to both online and back-room games.

Pop Culture: Stand-up comic Nick Flanagan delivers analysis of everything in pop culture – from film trailer reviews to the tabloid shenanigans of today's celebrities.

Real Estate: TORO’s Real Estate column features affluent estates, homes, and cottages with accompanying hi-res photo galleries.

The Details: Stand-up comic and writer Rebecca Addelman shares her thoughts on deviant sexual encounters and romantic blunders, with tongue-in-cheek "advice" for hapless male readers.

Sex: Performance artist and avant-garde poet Louise Bak takes readers beyond typical bedroom activity, exploring the erotic impulse in art, culture, and society. Topics have included: sex with robots, sex and yoga, Japanese rope bondage, extreme sex art, and other titillating subjects.

StyleBook: TORO’s international street fashion reporters contribute candid pictures of various stylish men, with an intended focus on originality and authenticity.

TORO Woman: Video and photographic profiles of up-and-coming pop stars, actresses, and models with interviews providing insight into their lives and latest projects.

Travel: An ongoing survey of five-star resorts around the globe and also first-person travelogues from TORO contributors.

Women - What's The Deal?: Writer and stand-up comic Rebecca Addelman blogs and delivers video columns about the mistakes that men make when dealing with women, dishing out her own distinct brand of sarcastic advice about the right and wrong ways to handle the opposite sex.

Sports: Thomas Bink offers his weekly "grouchy old man" spin on the world of athletics.

Talking To: In-depth interviews with trend-setters and taste-makers – actors, writers, and sports stars, among other prominent figures.

The Underrated: Author Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall explores anything in the TORO spectrum (film, food, fashion, etc.) that he feels is deserving of more respect.

Wanted: TORO's weekly compilation of high-end products, with a consistent focus on gadgets. Accompanying hi-resolution galleries are included.
