The Upper West Side is a neighborhood in Buffalo, New York.

Geography

The Upper West Side is bounded on the north by the Scajaquada Expressway and the Buffalo State College campus. On the east is Richmond Avenue and the Elmwood Village. To the south border is Hampshire Street and Albany Street, and to the west is the Niagara River.

The main streets which run through the Upper West Side are Lafayette Avenue and West Ferry Street (E-W) and Richmond Avenue, Grant Street and Niagara Street (N-S). Colonial Circle is located at the intersection of Lafayette and Richmond, and is one of three circles which comprise the northern portion of the Omstead Park and Parkway system. The monumental Richardson Complex lies just south of Buffalo State College. Here on grounds designed by Frederick Law Olmsted sits H.H. Richardson's masterpiece, the Buffalo Psychiatric Center.

The Upper West Side is a traditional landing zone for immigrant populations. Often associated with Italian immigrants who came to Buffalo in great numbers starting around the turn of the twentieth century, today the area has large Somalian, Sudanese, Middle Eastern, Eastern European, Mexican and Central American, Puerto Rican, and Southeast Asian enclaves.

The Grant-Ferry Commercial District, once one of the most dynamic neighborhood commercial districts in Buffalo, is the heart of this part of Buffalo. While the district has experienced significant disinvestment and blight, it is starting to experience revitalization reflecting the area's new demographic and interest from "urban pioneers."
