English: X-ray/optical composite image of NGC 6543, the Cat's Eye Nebula (X-ray: NASA/UIUC/Y.Chu et al., Optical: NASA/HST).

Optical image: Wide Field Planetary Camera-2, composite image of three images taken at different wavelengths:

  • red, hydrogen-alpha, 656.28 nm;
  • blue, neutral oxygen, 630 nm;
  • green, ionized nitrogen, 658.4 nm.

Captions

The "Cat's-eye" nebula, NGC 6543, is a planetary nebula: the gas emitted at high speed from the surface of a star which is in the process of becoming a white dwarf. This one is complex possibly due to a binary companion's influence.
