Originally copyrighted 1946 by MGM, the film has been in the public domain in the United States since the 1970s.[1] Screenshots and other matter taken from public domain prints and DVD releases of the film do not violate any copyright Warner Home Video may have on their 2006 DVD release of the film so long as the matter does not originate from that release.
A renewal check was done in film for the years 1973 and 1974. There were no listings for this title; there's no evidence of continuing copyright on the film.
Note that it may still be copyrighted in jurisdictions that do not apply the rule of the shorter term for US works (depending on the date of the author's death), such as Canada (70 years p.m.a.), Mainland China (50 years p.m.a., not Hong Kong or Macao), Germany (70 years p.m.a.), Mexico (100 years p.m.a.), Switzerland (70 years p.m.a.), and other countries with individual treaties.
