While the Vietnamese spelling is Thái, I understand that in English sources Tai is more common and Thai usually refers more specifically to the group also known as Siamese (Thai people). Is Thai actually the commonly used spelling among English-language sources focusing on the Tai groups in Vietnam? If not, the article should probably be renamed. --Paul_012 (talk) 07:36, 27 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Paul 012: From reading the other language editions of this article, "Thái" in Vietnam refers only to Southwestern Tai speaking groups, northern Tai peoples are not included under this collective term. I would suggest moving the page to Thái people. The current title is very confusing, before I read the article, I thought the content would be similar to Thais in the United Kingdom. --Glennznl (talk) 21:53, 30 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thái people would be a very WP:SMALLDETAILS difference that might be even more confusing, given how search engines often ignore diacritics, though it does appear to be followed by most other Wikipedias. Sgnpkd, what do you think of the suggestion? (I still wonder how English-language scholarly sources approach the spelling, but it's impossible to tell by simple Google tests.) --Paul_012 (talk) 22:52, 30 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Paul 012: I found examples in Google scholar here. The "Thai" spelling is also used, as seen here. We could also add "(Vietnam)", so the title would be "Thái people (Vietnam)" or "Thai people (Vietnam)". I would prefer the spelling with the diacritic however, as this group is not an ethnic group at all, but a Vietnamese collective term specifically used to indicate Southwestern Tai speaking peoples of Northwest Vietnam, and therefore the Vietnamese spelling should be kept. --Glennznl (talk) 09:29, 1 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
