WikiCup 2024 August newsletter
The fourth round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 29 August. Each of the 8 contestants who advanced to Round 4 scored at least 472 points, and the following contestants scored more than 700 points:
- Generalissima (submissions) with 1,150 points, mostly from 3 featured articles, 2 featured lists, 7 good articles, and 13 did you know nominations;
- Arconning (submissions) with 791 points, mostly from 2 featured lists, 8 good articles, 4 did you know nominations, and plenty of reviews;
- AirshipJungleman29 (submissions) with 718 points, mostly from a high-multiplier featured article on Genghis Khan and 2 good articles; and
- BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 714 points, mostly from 1 featured article on Susanna Hoffs, 2 featured lists, and 3 good articles.
Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated. Contestants put in extraordinary amounts of effort during this round, and their scores can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 36 featured articles, 55 featured lists, 15 good articles, 93 in the news credits, and at least 333 did you know credits. They have conducted 357 featured content reviews, as well as 553 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 30 articles to featured topics and good topics.
Any content promoted after 29 August but before the start of Round 5 can be claimed during Round 5, which starts on 1 September at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. If two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether for a good article, featured content, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Remember to claim your points within 14 days of earning them, and importantly, before the deadline on 31 October.
If you would like to learn more about rules and scoring for the 2024 WikiCup, please see this page. Further questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. I see you also reverted the edit at Washington (state). These have been added to every US state. My concern is the unbalanced level of detail. I started a discussion at Talk:Utah#Native tribes. Cheers. Magnolia677 (talk) 20:27, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
SR 20 route description
I just wanted to say thank you for the route description on the SR 20 article, but also ask (in the best way possible), are you insane?? Like that is a level of detail I wouldn’t expect most would even want to read let alone type multiple paragraphs about haha. Have a good day and uhh don’t get carpel tunnel! - bugs Thebuggygamer (talk) 04:46, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
Link Connections
Why are some connections allowed to be on the route page, but not bus connections? Where even in the station articles would something like this go? Other metro systems (Beijing for one) list all connections on the main route page. 2601:601:A501:1B41:5811:780C:8722:E812 (talk) 20:52, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- There are Service sections in each of the station articles that already describe the general areas served by buses from that station; per WP:NOTGUIDE, we should not be going too far into the specifics, and practically the number of route changes makes it difficult to maintain if we get too detailed. Other metro systems should not be used as templates as the 1 Line article is a featured article and is held to a higher standard. SounderBruce 20:59, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- So it is not acceptable to help people out and list what bus connections are at each stop? Then why are things like the street cars, Sounder train, or RapidRide Lines (ref 2Line) included in the connections table? 2601:601:A501:1B41:5811:780C:8722:E812 (talk) 21:00, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- More stable forms of transit are acceptable to list out; ST reflects this in what they include on maps (symbols for the ferries, Sounder/Amtrak, and RapidRide, but not for the local buses). SounderBruce 21:03, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not seeing anything in the WP:NOTGUIDE that precludes bus connections from being provided. Also, per the ST website https://www.soundtransit.org/ride-with-us/stations/link-light-rail-stations, it does not appear that KCM's RapidRide is included on their maps. Neither is CT's Swift, which connects at Lynnwood. 2601:601:A501:1B41:5811:780C:8722:E812 (talk) 21:06, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

Link pictograms
Hello, as per your request I created a new account (formerly User:LinkLightRail)
Why should the Link pictograms be preserved? Sound Transit has stated that they are deprecated. They can be retained deeper in the article, but they serve no current value and should not remain in the header. The template for numbers seems to be working just fine. LinkLightRailFan (talk) 06:36, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- @LinkLightRailFan: They have value as illustrations that have been explained in the article, and as part of the public art program. I was planning to roll out a way to have them displayed in the Public art sections of the articles, but ran into difficulty with the templates (since they require backgrounds unless I upload new versions). Unfortunately any non-free image file that isn't used in an article gets quickly deleted, so it's important not to remove them from articles. SounderBruce 06:39, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- I agree they should be preserved somehow, they were a unique element of the early Link. Please put the numbers back as soon as the template is fixed though, as this will only confuse riders. LinkLightRailFan (talk) 06:50, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- @LinkLightRailFan: FWIW, Wikipedia is generally not meant to be a real-time operation. It's fine for things to be slightly out of date while we wait for reliable sources to catch up and be ready to cite. SounderBruce 06:52, 7 September 2024 (UTC)

DYK for Bothell, Washington
On 8 September 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Bothell, Washington, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Bothell, Washington. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Bothell, Washington), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Template question
Hi Bruce. I noticed you added a comment to another editor's talk page on 3 November 2019 which appeared, to my eye, to be boilerplate text generated by a template you used rather than text you composed yourself. My question is, what template generated that text? Thank you. Spideog (talk) 17:53, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Spideog: The template's name ({{uw-unsourced1}}) is commented out on that page. It was generated using Twinkle. SounderBruce 21:54, 12 October 2024 (UTC)
Hi, you have listed this for TFA at pending for November. I have tentatively reserved a date for it, but if you would still like it be considered you will need to nominate it at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests, which is now open. Cheers. Gog the Mild (talk) 20:18, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reminder and for leaving the slot open. I have posted my blurb to TFAR. SounderBruce 00:28, 13 October 2024 (UTC)
MLS Cup 1999 scheduled for TFA
This is to let you know that the above article has been scheduled as today's featured article for 21 November 2024. Please check that the article needs no amendments. Feel free to amend the draft blurb, which can be found at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/November 2024, or to make comments on other matters concerning the scheduling of this article at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/November 2024.
