Etymology

From Old Irish álaind (“lovely, fine, splendid”); *ad-lainn; See loinn. Stokes prefers referring it to áil (“pleasant”), *pagli-, English fair, root pag. But ra-laind (“pleasant”), *ad-pland (Holden).
