From Aramaic סָבא (sāƀā) "ancestor; elder; grandfather"; related to native Hebrew שָׂב (sav).

  • Though historically the primary sense was “old man” or “old wise man” (in which sense it was used also as an adjective), in modern use the primary sense is “grandfather”.
  • This noun is a bit formal today; the more colloquial term for a grandfather is סבא (sába).
