editBorrowed into West Semitic from Akkadian 𒀀𒂵𒈬𒌝 (agammum), from Sumerian 𒀀𒂵𒄠 (agam). Compare Classical Syriac ܐܓܡܐ (ʾaḡmā, “marsh, swamp”) and Hebrew אֲגַם (ʾaḡamm, “lake, swamp”).
