Usage notes
edit- In phono-semantic (形聲) or ideogrammic (會意) compound characters, the radical as the semantic component may signify the sense of punishment, figuratively as a net that captures wrongdoing. Examples include 罪, 詈, 罰, 罵, 罷, etc.
- In 曼, 夢, and derived characters, the middle component 罒 originates from 目 (“eye”) in oracle bone script and bronze script.

Pictogram (象形) – a net. Sometimes, the web on top is stylized as 罒, which is unrelated to the eye 目: see 買, 罵, 詈 (used in 罰) and 羅 (> 罗), in which it represents a net.
