Alternative forms

In vertical layout, the character may appear as two short lines or as two dots in the upper right corner, however the latter is mostly limited to 楷體／楷体 (kǎitǐ) fonts. In later adopted horizontal layout, the character only rarely appears, and looks similar to an equals sign (=) with the lower stroke at the baseline or the character is centered in the middle.

Usage notes

The character is used very similarly to modern iteration marks (々, 〻).

The character signifies repetition of the previous character, but if two marks are placed with only one character in between, the sequence of both characters is repeated:

• 水𖿣 would nowadays be usually written as 水水.
• 玄𖿣牝𖿣 would nowadays be usually written as 玄牝玄牝.

In vertical layouts, the character used to be written in the space between the characters or alternatively and as it is nowadays more common, as a character of the same width as a usual character.

Nowadays, the mark is used very rarely.
