'Foo terms with audio links' -> 'Foo terms with audio'

User:This, that and the other pointed out that categories named e.g. Category:English terms with audio links contain terms with audio pronunciations, where it isn't clear why the word "link" is there. I suppose it could be argued that they contain an embedded link to a separate audio file in the File: space, but this seems to be an artifact of the implementation, not something inherent in the audio bar. So I propose renaming to just e.g. Category:English terms with audio, or maybe Category:English terms with audio pronunciation. Benwing2 (talk) 04:09, 6 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Benwing2 there is another type of audio too ({{listen}}, Category:Entries with audio examples) which makes me think we should have "pronunciation" in the category name. This, that and the other (talk) 11:27, 6 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
This seems to have been just completely forgotten, since it is not even connected to the language modules by categorization, the template not taking a language parameter. As foreign language entries can have images, they can have audio examples, particularly for entries for terms for sounds only conceptualized in the foreign language but not English. The naming “audio examples” is correct thus, in analogy to {{examples}}.
The images, employing raw wikitext File: and templates such as {{multiple images}}, require another bot run, but I can’t think of an alternative to renaming the nominated {{audio}} categories to “language name terms with audio pronunciation”, so the solution to it alone does not depend on the insight. Hmm, IMO {{listen}} should be merged into {{audio}}. Something to get to eventually. Benwing2 (talk) 08:54, 9 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2 I'm not convinced that a merger is needed. The look of the templates is very different, and intentionally so - {{listen}} has a role more akin to an illustrative image, and floats in the same area of the entry, whereas {{audio}} is designed to put its content inline. @This, that and the other I would agree with you except that there are a large number of {{listen}}-type files that currently use {{audio}}, based on the captions. For example, looking at the nonstandard captions, I see, among others:
2 Recording of a Dalek voice
   2 Gesualdo-moro lasso al mio duolo 2:40
1 the words ''Kyrie eleison'' from the Kyriale Mass XI: ''Orbis Factor''
1 the sound of the rumble of thunder
1 the sound of the BBC pips
   1 the sound of a pig's "oink"
   1 the sound of a cow's "moo"
1 the bellow of an [[elk]]
1 Whalesong of the humpback whale
1 The squeak of a guinea pig
1 The sound of the trickle of a brook
1 The sound of a ukelele being strummed
   1 The sound of a man's wheeze
1 The sound of a civil defense siren
1 The sound of a car engine starting up
   1 The rustle of paper
1 The clink of metal being dropped on the ground
1 The buzz of an electronic alarm clock
1 Deep twang of a loose bow string
1 Audio sample of the four cello strings (C-G-D-A)
1 Audio of a bird cheeping
   1 Audio WS
   1 10s of white noise
   1 10s of violet noise
   1 10s of red noise
   1 10s of pink noise
   1 10s of gray noise
   1 10s of blue noise
   1 ''Sakura'' song
Most likely, none of these are pronunciations. We could "fix" this with appropriate additional params to {{audio}}, but it's not clear people will use them. Benwing2 (talk) 09:01, 9 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2 In my view these should be transitioned to use {{listen}}. The difference in intent of the two templates is clearly documented on the documentation pages. Perhaps {{listen}} could do with a clearer name. This, that and the other (talk) 09:30, 9 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2 without seeing your comment above, I went ahead and migrated the uses of {{audio}} you listed above to {{listen}}. Many of these instances of {{audio}} were nested inside {{examples}}, creating a poor appearance. I certainly wasn't trying to be obtuse by doing this - I didn't realise you had a different idea about what to do. This, that and the other (talk) 09:58, 13 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@This, that and the other Don't worry about it and thanks for doing that. It's probably fine for them to stay separate. Benwing2 (talk) 20:15, 13 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
My naming preference is "Foo terms with audio pronunciation" to match "Foo terms with IPA pronunciation". "with audio" makes sense to me personally, but I don't see what's wrong with being more explicit. Ultimateria (talk) 20:38, 13 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
  Done. Benwing2 (talk) 21:35, 5 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
